By avoiding gasoline from some big oil companies, you can curtail the funding of terrorists.
The idea behind this one is that big oil companies buy all their oil from the Middle East and as a result of this the money we pay for this gas ends up in the hands of terrorists.
This is an incorrect assumption because under a third of U.S. crude oil imports originate from Arab OPEC countries (Algeria, Iraq, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia). And again, oil companies do not just sell gasoline through their branded service stations, but through many other stations, making it almost impossible to figure out where the gasoline you are purchasing came from.
Cellular phones have triggered explosions at gas stations.
The American Petroleum Institute says that "we can find no evidence of someone using a cell phone causing any kind of accident, no matter how small, at a gas station anywhere in the world."
The Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association has said, "There is no evidence whatsoever that a wireless phone has ever caused ignition or explosion at a gas station anywhere in the world. Wireless phones don't cause gas stations to blow up."
Enough said.
